Geek Chic Cosmetics Samples Haul Reviews/Swatches

A couple months ago, I put in order for a ton of samples at Geek Chic Cosmetics because (guess it) I loved the geeky inspirations for the sets. So, naturally, I had to get them all. I tried out their mineral eyeshadows, mineral blushes, bronzers and powder. All the swatches are on bare skin, with no primer. Here are my thoughts.

Everything arrived nicely, with the samples in clamshell containers (more on those in the overall thoughts) and a letter confirming my order, which included a nice handwritten thanks.

These are the mineral blushes, bronzer and powder. I sampled Nerdgasm, Strawberry Shortcake, Screentan and Lana.

I wasn't a huge fan.

Lana, the powder, was a little too pale and had some pink undertones that didn't match my skin. The feeling of the mineral powder was nice, it didn't feel like I had makeup on. It didn't have much coverage though and felt more like a finishing powder than a foundation.

Strawberry Shortcake is a light matte pink. Didn't show up too well on my tan skin and looked chalky because it was too light. Staying power wasn't good, 1-2 hours tops.

Nerdgasm is a dusty shimmery pink, which they claim to be their version of NARS Orgasm. I liked it a little better than Strawberry Shortcake, but the staying power wasn't the best.

Screentan, the bronzer, showed up as a light beige/brown with hints of purple. Definitely didn't work as a contour for my tan skin and the staying power mimicked the staying power of the blushes. It was a nice neutral eyeshadow color though, since it barely showed up.

From their Win or Die set, I sampled The Pointy End, Across The Narrow Sea, Kingslayer, The Imp, and Sellsword. Being a fan of the book and TV series, Game of Thrones, I just had to try the set out!

The Pointy End is a shimmery dark taupe. I like the color, since it's neutral but shimmery.

Across The Narrow Sea is a bright teal, almost sky blue. It applied a bit chalky.

Kingslayer is a pretty (picture doesn't do it justice!) light shimmery off white with hints of gold shimmer. I use it often to brighten the inner tearducts of my eyes. (Also because I love Jaime Lannister <3)

The Imp is a glittery, golden taupe. It's darker than in the picture, but pretty nonetheless. It's really glittery though, so there's a lot of glitter fall out (reminds me of Urban Decay's Midnight Cowboy eyeshadows, the amount of glitter fall out)

Sellsword is a simple matte brown. I blame the patchyness of the swatch to human error, it really is a nice red-toned brown.

Out of the N7 collection, I sampled N7, Matriach, Scientist Salarian, Archangel, Normandy, Element Zero, What's Under The Helmet? and Cerberus. Somebody posted a link to Geek Chic Cosmetics on reddit.com/r/makeupaddiction and once I saw they had a Mass Effect themed collection, I just had to have it, being a HUGE Mass Effect fan.

N7 is a matte red. Stains the lids a bit, but other than that it's really red!

Matriarch is bright, slightly shimmery blue. Reminds me of my favorite justicar, Samara.

Scientist Salarian is a shimmery brown taupe. It's more shimmery and coppery than The Pointy End. I love it on the lids for an amped up brown smokey eye.

Archangel is hard to describe. Named after my Gar-bear (Garrus), it wasn't what I was expecting. It's a light frosty green, which is a unique color. I don't think I've seen a color like it!

Normandy is your standard gunmetal. It's nice, but I have dupes for it.

Element Zero is a frosty, shimmery light blue. It's super light, so that the blue is hardly even noticeable.

What's Under The Helmet? is a matte purple. It's more cool toned, which is nice.

Cerberus, the let down of the bunch, is a glittery gold. The fallout is intense and the shadow is very sheer. However, it is a true yellow gold, which is nice to have because I have more coppery gold shadows.

I picked two other random shades I liked from their eye shadow collection. Swamp is from the Single Player  collection and Princess in Distress is from the Mushroom Kingdom collection.

Swamp is a matte, almost satin-y black. Nothing too special about it. I picked it because it references a mana color from Magic the Gathering.

Princess is Distress is a gorgeous shimmery glittery light pink. The glitter fall out is insane, but the color is pretty so I let that slide.

I sampled three shadows from their Pwny-Tales collection, which references My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. I picked colors which coordinated with my favorite ponies: Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie and Applejack!

20% Cooler is a sky blue with rainbow colored glitter. It's hard to photograph, but the glitter is multicolored.

Cupcakes is a shimmery magenta with pink sparkles. Matches the color of Pinkie Pie's mane!

Sugarcube is a sheer orange/yellow with golden shimmer. It wasn't as pigmented as the other two, but it's clearly orange.

OVERALL:

The geeky names really drew me in, but the products were severely lacking. The staying power of the blush/bronzer/foundation wasn't great and the mineral eyeshadows creased on me with and without primer (I used Urban Decay Primer Potion). I liked how some colors were sheer but could be built up to full opacity, but some colors were just too sheer (Sugarcube, Cerberus, Kingslayer).

Sadly, I won't be purchasing anything else from Geek Chic Cosmetics. The customer service was nice and I can see myself using these shadows to experiment with looks, but I won't be trying anymore products. I'm slightly interested in their lip glosses though, so maybe in the future there'll be a Geek Chic Cosmetics review/swatches part two!

See you soon, Jenn
